A Tribute to Randy Savage

Randall Mario Poffo known worldwide as Randy Savage passed away on Friday in a car crash. But let’s remember the good things about Randy Savage. I may not have been alive while Randy was at his peak in the 80’s as I’m a 90’s kid, but Randy Savage was still at it while I was growing up. Watching WCW I remember Savage being a part of the NWO while I was growing up. But because of the internet and websites which allow you to view old school pay per views and programming I get to watch Randy in his actual prime.

Everyone knows that Savage had such an amazing match at WrestleMania III when he faced Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. This match was the match to end a lengthy feud by the two stars where Savage had crushed Steamboat’s larynx. Both guys athleticism is what made the match the classic it is today and one of the matches talked about when you think of Randy Savage.

Savage was one of the many prestigious holders of the Intercontinental Championship and the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. The teaming of “The Mega Powers” with Hulk Hogan was a top alliance back then being two top draws at the box office. The Mega Powers main feud was with The Mega Bucks (Andre the Giant and Ted DiBiase) and in 1991 we saw the retirement of Randy Savage from an active role as he lost to The Ultimate Warrior in a retirement match at WrestleMania VII. But later in that year after starting off his commentating role Savage proposed to Miss Elizabeth which led to a feud with Jake “The Snake” Roberts who planted a live snake in one of the gift boxes at the wedding.

Bringing it forward a bit in 1994 he arrived on the scene of WCW where it was speculated that he would either shake the hand of Hogan or slap him, but it was the save that culminated to a handshake when Savage saved Hogan from a beatdown by the 3 Faces of Fear. In 1997 however we saw Savage turn on the fans and join the elite wrestling stable known as the New World Order. To begin with he helped out Hulk Hogan to defeat Roddy Piper, we saw Savage be reunited with Miss Elizabeth as he went on to feud with Diamond Dallas Page and his wife Kimberly.

It was in 2004 at least 5 years after Savage had left the WCW and wrestling in 1999 that he showed up on Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA Wrestling) to confront Jeff Jarrett. At Turning Point (a TNA PPV) he then teamed up with Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles to defeat the Kings of Wrestling (Jeff Jarrett, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall). In 2005 he was scheduled to face Jeff Jarrett for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship (TNA was under the NWA banner at the time), Savage wanted to win the belt and then lose it back to Jarrett at the next TNA pay per view but in December of 2004, Savage left TNA due to a dispute over how a match was supposed to finish at the next PPV.

In 2009, Savage had a DVD released about his work in professional wrestling by the World Wrestling Entertainment. The DVD would be known as Macho Madness: The Randy Savage Ultimate Collection. The DVD 3 disk set hosted by Maria Kaneills and Matt Striker featured over 8 hours of matches and promos but didn’t feature any biography or documentary about Randy Savage. Savage was also introduced more recently to the WWE All Star game.

Sadly the end is here, Randall Mario Poffo aka Randy Savage your presence in wrestling as well as the famous elbow drop will be sadly missed, Rest in Peace, Randy Savage.
